‘BAR SATHORN CROSS-CULTURE’ INSIGHTS

Fat Mango Studios partnered with W Bangkok to produce an ongoing social documentary series for Bar Sathorn, titled Cross Culture. First launched in early 2024, the series follows the evolution of the bar’s cocktail programme through seasonal ingredients and local collaborations across Thailand.

At the centre of the series is Marco, Head of Bar at Bar Sathorn, whose approach to menu development is deeply rooted in exploration. Each edition of Cross Culture introduces new ingredients sourced from different regions, from rooftop-grown produce in Bangkok to honey farms, Thai cacao, and organic agriculture in Chiang Mai, Chiang Dao, and beyond.

Our role was to follow this journey, capturing not just the ingredients, but the process behind them. Moving across locations, the series takes on a documentary approach, highlighting the people, environments, and stories that shape each cocktail.

Designed for social media, the challenge lies in translating a rich and layered narrative into short-form content. Each cycle is condensed into three to four videos, requiring a clear and intentional storytelling structure. With limited time, every frame, sequence, and edit must contribute to a focused narrative that remains engaging and accessible.

Over time, the project has evolved into a refined production system. Through multiple iterations, we developed a consistent approach centred around strong visual identity, intentional lighting, and an editing style tailored for fast-paced digital consumption. At the same time, maintaining authenticity remains key, ensuring that each story reflects the personality of both the ingredient and the people behind it.

Beyond production, the series offers a deeper connection to Thailand’s lesser-known ingredients and communities. From sustainable farming practices to local craftsmanship, each episode uncovers a different layer of the country’s cultural landscape.

As an ongoing collaboration, Bar Sathorn Cross Culture continues to grow, with each new chapter offering a fresh story, a new ingredient, and a different perspective on what defines contemporary cocktail culture in Thailand.
