Zac Underwood.
Welcome to the mind of Zac Underwood, where impossible becomes irresistible. This Thai-inspired sizzle extravaganza show at Phuket's Junkyard Theater perfectly captures his artistic philosophy in action.
Growing up in a creative household with award-winning designer John Underwood as his father, Zac was surrounded by transformation from an early age. Born in Australia but raised in Thailand since age three, he embodies the Third Culture Kid paradox: seeing the world in contrast as the tourist in his birth country, expat in his adopted home. And this contrast in live is what builds an interesting story to his arts.
"We do a Tom Yum Kung striptease, we have a big hotpot with flame at the bottom and have our drag queen emerging from the middle of the pot covered in chilies, and it's HOT."
This isn't just a creative process, it's artist philosophy made manifest. Today, Zac stands behind Underwood Art Factory, one of the unskippable names in global design, creating iconic landmarks worldwide.
Have you seen the stainless steel whale and dolphin sculptures in KLCC Park, Kuala Lumpur? That's Underwood's work.
As creative director of Junkyard Theater " virtual wonderland of recycling" every set is built from recycled materials. For Zac, this isn't limitation, it's liberation. Discarded materials become theatrical magic because he sees connections conventional thinking would miss. This contrast between incompatible worlds creates art that stops people in their tracks.
It's this ability to find harmony in discord that makes his work naturally magnetic. People don't just want to see what he'll create next, they want to understand how he sees the world so differently.
"Find two things that don't fit and make them fit, that creates something that is interesting because people are like what did you do there.… HOW did you do that?"
